The Makahuena Resort is a good mid-range property located on the ocean in the Poipu area of Kauai. This low-rise property offers a freshwater swimming pool, jacuzzi, sundeck, lighted tennis court, and a BBQ. The large well-furnished one, two, and three bedroom units all have full kitchens, ceiling fan, color cable TV, telephone, and washer/dryer. In a quiet, relaxing atmosphere, the Makahuena has great views of the ocean and is close to a great swimming beach and many shops and restaurants. It is a good choice for travelers wanting to vacation in the southern part of Kauai.

No sunrise, sunset, or whale passes unnoticed from this resort, located on a rocky bluff at the southernmost tip of Kauai, 1 mile east of Poipu Beach. Amenities include a tennis court and pool, and wooden benches tucked behind hedges offer spectacular front-row seating for watching whales or waves. All condo units have large windows, patios or balconies. Full kitchens include breakfast bars. Internet access is available via dial-up connections.

Due to the rocky coast, there is no access to the beach. However, a mile west is famed Poipu Beach, considered one of America's best beaches. S-shaped, the beach's lower loop is protected by a man-made reef, so water is calm. The upper loop offers surfing/boogie boarding. In between, there's great snorkeling among lava rocks around a small sand islet. To the east is Shipwreck Beach for surfing and beach walking.

The 79 condominium units are housed in two- and three-story, plantation-style wood buildings. The pool, sundeck, hot tub, barbecue area, and tennis court are seldom crowded. Access to upper floors is by outside stairs, not elevators.
