The Turtle Bay Resort
Perched on a lush, tropical peninsula surrounded by spectacular ocean vistas, The Hotel at Turtle Bay Resort is truly a vacation paradise. On all sides, magnificent emerald-blue ocean views extend as far as the eye can see from every one of the 375 guest rooms, 26 suites and 42 beach cottages.
Set amid five miles of shoreline, five secluded coves and bays, and five walking/jogging trails, this 880-acre resort encapsulates the North Shore's natural beauty. Adjacent to the hotel's east side is Kuilima Cove, protected by a reef from ocean swells for prime snorkeling and swimming. About one-half mile farther east is a natural, calm, saltwater pool called Keiki (Children's) Pool. Adjacent to the hotel's west side is Turtle Bay, site of surfing tournaments that are announced from a platform next to the hotel's swimming pool. About one-half mile farther west is picturesque Kawela Bay, another prime, reef-protected swimming/snorkeling spot. A World War II concrete bunker still stands at the tip of the bay's eastern point.
The hotel's two-level pool complex has an extra-large pool, two secluded hot tubs, a children's pool, and a 79-foot water slide into an upper-level pool. A lawn between the pool complex and the ocean has wood ocean-liner-type lounge chairs for enjoying the sun and the Pacific's majesty. Though it can't be seen, only imagined, there is an underwater canyon in front of the resort that humpback whales follow when returning to their summer home in Alaska after wintering in Hawaii. Opened in the 1970s, Turtle Bay supplies spaciousness and graciousness, which was enhanced by the hotel's $60-million renovation, completed in early 2003. A long window-wall in the airy, light-filled, flagstone lobby overlooks Kuilima Cove and, in the background, Kahuku Point, Oahu's northernmost tip, can be seen. Plush couches and chairs provide seating for vista views. The hotel consists of 442 rooms in three seven-floor wings. As part of the renovation, a health-and-beauty spa was created that offers massage, body, and facial treatments as well as hair and nail care. For children's activities, the hotel provides the Keiki Turtle Club and an arcade/game room. A business center includes high-speed Internet access. The Arnold Palmer Course is the site of the PGA Champions Tour Turtle Bay Championship. The front nine of this course reminds golfers of a true Scottish Links, while the back nine is more tropical in nature as it meanders through a jungle forest and a wetlands bird sanctuary.
The George Fazio Course has hosted the LPGA Tour's Hawaiian Open and was the site of the first Senior Skins Game, which included Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Gary Player and Sam Sneed. The course, George Fazio's only golf course in Hawaii, features generous fairways, deep bunkers and immaculately sculpted greens.
